Summer is in full swing. From gardening to golfing, we enjoy our time in the sun. Many of our clients ask about sunscreen and how to prevent sun damage to their skin. Unfortunately, SPF provides limited protection from sun exposure. Unless you live in a cave, moderation is truly the key to healthy skin.
Here’s how to achieve moderation:
- Stay out of the sun at the peak time of day, from about 10 am to 4 pm. If you are trying to get your daily dose of Vitamin D, UV exposure in the early morning or evening is best.
- Use sunscreen, whether chemical or mineral, to decrease the free radical damage to our skin. This means a reduction in all those side effects we want to avoid like wrinkles, redness, and dark spots.
- Wear enough sunscreen. Look at a shot glass and imagine that this is the minimum volume application for the body. It’s a lot more than you think.
- Lastly, and most importantly, try something new, like pairing your SPF with antioxidants. Keep reading to find out more!
How can we up the ante?
Pair your skin care regimen with antioxidants. The newest trend in sun care is the pairing of SPF with antioxidants specifically known to enhance protection. These antioxidants help the skin reduce damage by mopping up free radicals set loose by UV exposure. There are some exciting extracts and vitamins that experts recommend to prevent the cascade of events leading to UV damage. These include Vitamin A, C and E, and ECGC found in green tea. For summer, we recommend the Age-Defying Vitamin C+E Serum from Glytone with Red Tea Flavonoids or the Vitamin C/ Green Tea Serum from Skin Scripts with Co-Q 10 and Peptides. Both offer potent anti-aging benefits with enhanced brightening and cellular repair.
We also suggest multitasking with sunscreen in your makeup. We recommend Illuminaré oil-free Moisturizing Foundation SPF 20 or Complexion Correcting Shield SPF 50+ from Avene. Both offer 100% mineral broad spectrum sunscreen with complexion-perfecting and hydrating properties of a tinted moisturizer. Sunscreen should be reapplied every 2 hours as per the FDA. If you won’t reapply a creamy sunscreen once your makeup is on, start using a mineral powder with SPF protection and multitask! Layer these for great protection.
So, enjoy summer safely in moderation with liberal use of sunscreens AND antioxidants to minimize sun damage and premature aging. In the Fall, schedule a seasonal skin care treatment to address sun damage and prepare the skin for colder weather to come.
